Towards a Geography 'roadmap' for Europe

In September 2013 in Rome four organisations met to discuss the position of geography in schools in many European countries. They agreed to publish a joint declaration. This Rome Declaration is a joint European reaction to recent threats to reduce or even abolish geography content from school curricula.

EUGEO, the Association of European Geographical Societies, AIIG, the Italian Association of Geography Teachers, EUROGEO, the association of European Geographers, and the IGU and IGU Commission on Geographical Education signed a declaration that set some minimum requirements for geography in all European schools.

As follow-up of the Rome Declaration the representatives of EUGEO, EUROGEO and IGU / IGU-CGE met in Utrecht to start a discussion about developing a "roadmap" for Geography and geographical education. The organisations all agreed to jointly develop projects which would increase the profile of the discipline among important stakeholders, improve the connection between academic geography and geographical education, exchange good practices, develop a research agenda for geographical education, to establish guidelines and recommendations for 'geographical literacy' and build a strong professional networking structure.
